Ramzan

Ramzan is the ninth month of the ISLAMIC CALENDAR and is considered as one of the holiest month of the year. Ramzan is the month of fasting, in which all Muslims above the age of twelve participate to abstain from eating, drinking, smoking, and indulging in any activity that is in ill-natured from dawn until sunset. Fasting during the month of Ramadan, as laid down in the holy Quran is the fourth pillar of the faith. Fasting teaches the Muslims patience, modesty and spirituality.

During Ramzan Muslims offer more prayers than usual, they ask for forgiveness of their sins committed in the past, they pray for purifying themselves through self-restraint and good deeds, they also ask for guidance and help in refraining from everyday evils.

During Ramzan along with fasting, Muslims are encouraged to read the entire Qur'an. TARAWIH (Recitation of Qur’an by means of special prayers) are held in the mosques every night of the month, during which a whole section of the Qur'an is recited. By which the entire Qur'an would be completed at the end of the month. Ramzan is a time when Muslims slow down from worldly affairs and focus on self-reformation, spiritual cleansing and enlightenment; this is to establish a link between themselves and God through prayer. During this time Muslims involve themselves in supplication, charity, good deeds, kindness and helping others. There is also a social aspect involved the preparing of special foods and inviting people for IFTAR (Is the Evening Meal that Muslims take by breaking their fast during Ramzan). In many Muslim countries markets are closed in the evening to enable people to perform prayers and consume the IFTAR meal.
